Gauteng MEC for Social Development, Nomathemba Mokgethi visited the homeless shelters at the Westonaria Sports Complex on Wednesday, 23 September as part of a campaign to give people skills to sustain their lives.
The campaign also saw various departments and organisations such as Home Affairs, Labour, Health Department and various NPOs involved.
As government, we have committed to ensuring that shelter services in Gauteng are delivered in ways that help people living on the streets gain access to essential and basic social services that promote their dignity, respect diversity and ensure public value for funding,” Mokgethi said.
The MEC went on to say that government has to support these shelters so that people ultimately can become independent by using the skills they are given through the campaign.
“We came with the Department of Labour; they will register you on the database and you will be assisted to establish cooperatives. We do not want to see you back on the streets,” Mokgethi added.
