Cupcakes for kids with cancer

'To everyone who donated, we thank you'

A total of 750 cupcakes were donated to Cupcakes of HOPE in Loumarina on Saturday, 19 September.

Cupcakes of HOPE aims to raise awareness surrounding childhood cancer, and assists in raising funds for families in need of medical assistance.

Cupcakes of HOPE is a community-driven project that achieves its objectives through the love of baking cupcakes, community participation, and amazing events. Johan van der Merwe who coordinated the drive locally at his Vredenvlucht Coffee Shop in Loumarina, said this year’s project saw mass support from locals all in the name of helping to improve the lives of children living with cancer.

“Every year during the month of September, people are invited to bake cupcakes. The proceeds are transferred to the accounts of various charities,” Johan said, adding that the initiative meant to benefit all children suffering from any form of cancer under various charities. He said every R5 or even R2 when buying a cupcake is appreciated.

“Every little bit counts,” Johan said, and thanked the people of Randfontein for their support.

We were expecting 500 cupcakes but we were blessed to receive 250 more. I don’t know where the extra 250 came from; nonetheless, we are grateful for them,” he said.

He said this goes to show that people care and heeded the call to help. “It gets better by the year,” Johan said proudly.

He said in 2016, when he took part in the Humanitarian of the Year competition he got involved with the Childhood Cancer Foundation (CHOC) and realised that CHOC and Cupcakes of HOPE were working towards the same goal.

“The initiative also got more traction when Mugg & Bean came on board. You could buy a cupcake from them to support childhood cancer for the whole month of September. That brought the project to the attention of many people. To everyone who donated, we thank you,” Johan said.
