Local teacher survives Covid-19

Teacher said war against Covid-19 can be won. This is how he did it ...

The only way Oscar Oliphant survived the coronavirus while in isolation was by keeping his spirits high.

Oliphant, who is also a teacher at the Randfontein Secondary School, said after he tested positive for Covid-19 he was scared for his life. He also recently had to bury his mother.

“I decided to go to a private hospital to get tested; not that I had any symptoms, I just wanted peace of mind, and so that I could do something about it if my results would came back positive,” Oliphant said.

He admitted to being scared for his life. “I suddenly broke out in cold sweat, and I had scary thoughts running through my mind, especially about people in hospital and the entire pandemic. But then I decided to be strong. I went to my doctor, who was very helpful and explained to me what I needed to do.”

However, the fact that he lived alone was yet another another challenge as he could not be in contact with people for 14 days.

Oliphant said he survived his seclusion by keeping busy with lessons for his learners, and doing virtual teaching. However, sometimes it was difficult as it was mentally and emotionally taxing.

“I’ve also joined the so-called Survivors of Coronavirus group from which I drew strength and courage. That is how I kept my spirit up, which has been a lifeline for me, and helped me immensely,” Oliphant said.

Oliphant also said people who are in isolation should try to have contact with the outside world. He added that they should try to contact those who care about them by phoning and messaging them.

“They key is not to panic, and the best thing is to keep your mental strength in check. And if you are a religious person, keep your faith, make sure that you take your medication and keep to the regulations. Stay away from negativity, because this disease can be beaten,” Oliphant said.
