Toekies wants their heritage back

For the past three years, community members of Toekomsrus have not been able to use their only sports stadium.

Up until 2017, sport has been the cornerstone of the small community of Toekomsrus.

Jacques Julius, DA member of Parliament, and Nicolette Kiewietz, DA Ward 8 councillor, said that it broke their hearts to see Toekies’ only sports stadium deteriorate over the past three years.

All the schools and sports clubs in our community made use of the stadium because they do not have their own facilities. In 2017, the municipality took on a project to upgrade the stadium. One after the other company has been contracted to work on the project but no one ever seems to finish it,” said Kiewietz.

“Since then, the stadium has been vandalised and everything with any value was stolen. The municipality has not been able to give us any answers and now we demand transparency regarding this project.

Jacques Julius, DA member of Parliament, and Nicolette Kiewietz, DA councillor are unhappy about the state of Toekies’ only sports stadium.

“We want to know where the money allocated for this project went and we want to know when the community will be able to use the stadium again,” she added.

According to her, the schools in Toekomsrus cannot host any sports events and children are forced to play sports such as soccer in the streets because of the state of the stadium.

Julius added that this stadium would have been ideal during the Covid-19 pandemic since the vast space would enable people to exercise while maintaining social distancing.

Sport is part of our heritage. Toekomsrus has yielded many world champions, but how can we expect soccer players and boxers to make their dreams come true without any facilities?” Julius concluded.
