‘Carryou Ministry is not closing down’

‘Covid-19 has hit us all very hard and we are appealing to the Randfontein community and business people for the funding we need’

Executive members of Carryou Ministry in Randfontein say they are not closing down.

In a statement issued by Lawrence Mabaso, general manager of Carryou Ministry Randfontein, the non-profit organisation’s current Executive Board member apologises that the article published online dated 30 July 2020 with headline Covid-19 threat may force Carryou to close its doors after 20 years and in print with headline Desperate time for Carryou on page 11 of the 7 August edition of the Herald did not accurately reflect the total number of staff members that Carryou has at the Toekomsrus Children Drop-in Centre and Elandsvlei Drop-in Centres, Early Childhood Development Centres and the playgroup on the Landfill site.

The figures of 150 caregivers and 10 office personnel are incorrect, and are in fact 95 staff members that include two managers.

Further, it is vital for us to acknowledge the role that the Department of Social Development has played in funding the above programmes and providing the stability Carryou Ministry has so desperately needed at times through the years. They have funded the Toekomsrus Programme for 15 years and Elandsvlei for 11 years.

“This has allowed us to provide stable employment for many people. Social Development has also funded Carryou to run a feeding scheme at Ithuteng High School and other rural outreach sites.

“However, Carryou has grown beyond the bounds of what the Department of Social Development provides for, in providing the communities of greater Randfontein with Early Childhood Development, Agricultural Food Development, Tertiary Education Funding and Health-related services.

“Other local and international funders such as Lotto, individuals and churches in America play a big role in this regard. However, Lotto has notified us that we will not be receiving funding from them this year due to Covid-19, as they are funding Covid-19 related functions.

“Covid-19 has hit us all very hard and we are appealing to the Randfontein community and business people for the funding we need, which is not covered by Social Development. Our monthly shortfall to cover transport, administrative and operational costs, and salaries of the General Manager, Financial Officer and Human Resources Officer, amounts to a minimum of R60 000 per month. We need this to continue our mission in Randfontein.”
