Appalling living conditions exposed in Toekies

From dead carcasses to all sort of other things, Toekies has basically turned into a dumping site.

Residents of Toekomsrus have been battling with illegal dumping for some time and the situation has become critical.

According to Ward 20 councillor, Pule Ramphore, at least three wards in the area have been neglected for as long as a year.

“Residents in Wards 8, 10 and 20 have been living under bad conditions as piles of rubbish increase continuously without any service from the municipality. We have been battling with this issue for a while now. All they is that they have a backlog of broken equipment, including refuse trucks,” Ramphore said.

He added that he had been inundated with calls as people are frustrated by the situation.

Residents are still expected to pay for the services that they do not get,” Ramphore complained.

He said the conditions people have been subjected to are appalling and unfair.

Ramphore went on to say that in the midst of fighting Covid-19, it is a shame that people were expected to stay home and face the growing, disgusting heaps of rubbish in their wards.

“Every day people have to endure horrible odours from dead carcasses and all other sorts of things that make breathing really difficult,” he added.
