Weekend armed business robbery and shootout an eye-opener, warns EPR

EPR West Rand warns businesses following Westonaria armed business robbery – one of at least 15 crime incidents this past weekend.

When EPR Security released its crime report for the last weekend in June, its General Manager, Johan Krogh, warned that the business robbery on Allen Street, Westonaria should be an eye-opener.

EPR reported on the incident on its Facebook page, saying that on Sunday, 28 June at 9.31am the EPR control centre received a call that a business on Allen Street, Westonaria had just been robbed by five armed robbers.

One of the EPR Westonaria response units was at the premises within two minutes and saw a silver Kia speeding off. Members of the public told them that it was the robbers’ getaway vehicle, and the reaction officers went after them as they fled towards Randfontein.

The officers informed the Randfontein branch about the pursuit and described the vehicle to them, to which five of their units responded. In Hillside the suspects started shooting at the officers and hit one of the vehicle’s tyres. However, the Randfontein units cornered the suspects near the Senwes silos in Middelvlei, but the suspects retaliated by shooting at them.

They returned fire, and shift leaders Sheppard and Du Plooy, and reaction officers Deysel, Dirksen en Du Plessis managed to apprehend three of the suspects. They also confiscated three firearms and recovered stolen goods, which they handed over to the police, along with the suspects, for further investigations.

Krogh said none of their members were injured.

He added that at least 15 incidents took place during the last weekend, most of them at business premises.

There were five incidents of theft in various areas of Randfontein, as well as five incidents of damage to property in Bekkersdal, Bootha Plots, Homelake, Tenacres Plots and Westonaria.

Furthermore, Krogh said, two fires were reported in Elandsvlei and Homelake respectively, and there were three incidents of business break-ins – two in Westonaria and one in Randfontein.
