Local gospel singer nominated despite Covid-19

Mohlakeng gospel singer aged 30 nominated for both a MAMA and GAMA award.

Lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic posed all kinds of challenges, especially for artists.

Mvanakazi Mokoto Maduma, 30, a gospel singer from Mohlakeng, found that the life of an artist is not easy in times like these as there are no gigs or income, but that did not stop her.

“My interview with the Herald not so long ago put in me in the spotlight and gave my music career the opportunity to be recognised. I am extremely grateful. Today I am signed by Wisdom Entertainment.”

She said she shot her first music video during lockdown because she could not put her career on hold any further.

I sent my information to Mzantsi Arts & Media Awards (MAMA), including my biography, application, photo and one of my songs. I entered the best gospel artist category, and I was nominated immediately. I was so excited,” she said.

Mvanakazi said she did not enter the Golden Art and Media Awards (GAMA) herself, they approached her.

“I was nominated last year for best song of the year at the GAMA awards and I won, so they nominated me for best music video this time around. They also want me to be part of their new development,” she said.

“This Covid-19 pandemic might stay longer than we expected so we might as well find a way to live with it. I am grateful to the Lord for the talent I have, it’s working on my behalf,” she concluded.
