Covid-19 kits, food parcels donated to WAWA

The Public Servants Association (PSA) not only donated a Covid-19 kit and food parcels to WAWA but want victims to know that they are with them.

The Public Servants Association (PSA) of South Africa visited Woman Against Woman and Child Abuse (WAWA) in Toekomsrus on Youth Day (16 June) to hand over food parcels and a Covid-19 kit.

According to Genevieve Simelane, PSA chairperson, the PSA is a registered trade union at the forefront of labour developments.

“We are the largest, politically non-affiliated, fully representative union in the public service. With a proud history of decades of service to its members, the PSA represents more than 235 000 public sector employees. The PSA’s conduct is aimed at achieving the union mission, guided by the values of loyalty, transparency, respect, integrity, consistency, and service excellence.

“Every year PSA meets it social responsibility obligation to assist the community – not just our members. This initiative was aimed at identifying a community that is in need and has really suffered because of lockdown as most people are not working. They are but one of many such communities,” she said.

Genevieve said they chose WAWA because it’s aligned with gender-based violence.

“We not only want to bring food parcels and a Covid-19 kit, but we want to empower women; we want to leave them a message that we are with them and understand what they are going through.

As much as we are fighting Covid-19, we are still fighting gender-based violence.

“With media reports showing the increase in gender-based violence cases, like the horrific murder of Tshegofatso Pule, those are issues we look at as a union and federation,” she said.

Enrique Bhana, centre manager of WAWA, said more than 20 people have benefited from the PSA donation, and he is grateful that the WAWA centre was chosen out of the entire West Rand.

“They could have chosen any centre but they chose us. PSA is a very big union. I believe that they chose us based on our determination and the hard work that we do at WAWA,” he said.
