Back to school during Covid-19 era at Malerato

The Herald visited Malerato Primary School in Mohlakeng as the new era of schooling began on 8 June.

It was all about safety measures when Grade 7 learners headed back to Malerato Primary School in Mohlakeng on Monday, 8 June.

According to Georgina van Wyk, principal at Malerato, preparations started two weeks prior to the official start date.

“Our school has been deep-cleaned, and we have marked the floors in the classrooms with yellow tape to help learners to adhere to social-distancing regulations. Currently, we have 15 learners per classroom.

“Each and every class has a desk with a water container, bucket, soap and disposal tissues for learners and educators to wash their hands regularly. We have given our learners and educators two cloth face masks each, not to mention face shields and hand sanitizers,” she said.

Gabriel Mangena, a Grade 7 teacher said although he was anxious to return, it’s good to be back.

“The reality is that we neither can see the virus nor do we know who is Covid-19 positive or negative. For me, screening is not enough. Testing is more accurate. Our safety and health are of utmost importance but there is no doubt that every safety measure possible is in place.
