First day of new era at AB Phokompe

It was back to class for Grade 12s on 8 June.

It was a long wait, but it is finally over.

After more than 60 days, thousands of learners returned to school on Monday, 8 June.

The Herald visited AB Phokompe Secondary School in Mohlakeng that very day to find out how the matrics felt about being back in class.

For the Grade 12s in particular, the pandemic could not have come at a worse time as 2020 will not only be their final year at school, but their cards had been shuffled.

A Grade 12 learner who lives in Toekomsrus and attends AB Phokompe said she was happy and nervous at the same time.

“I am happy that 2020 will not be a wasted year, but what if I get the virus and infect my parents at home? We do not know who has it and who does not,” she said.

Sello Tshawe, an AB Phokompe learner who lives in Mohlakeng, said he did not enjoy learning from home at all.

“Learning from home is a disadvantage for me; I have young siblings who disturbs me when I am studying. Safety comes first though to protect myself,” he said.
