Covid-19 cases on West Rand rise by almost 200 in days, another death

Confirmed Covid-19 cases now stand at 282, with 49 recoveries and four deaths, according to Gauteng Provincial Government’s latest breakdown of Covid-19 cases.

The West Rand District saw probably its biggest spike yet as the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases now stands at 282, with 49 recoveries and four deaths.

As at Saturday, 23 May the total number of cases in the district was 86 but three days later, as at Monday, 25 May this has increased by a massive 196.

Merafong City is now the hot spot in the district, with a staggering 126 confirmed Covid-19 cases and only four recoveries.

This comes after the Gauteng Department of Health confirmed 164 cases of Covid-19 at the Anglo Gold Ashanti Mponeng Mine in Merafong.

A statement by the Gauteng Provincial Government relating to Covid-19 cases read, “Mine Management indicated that all underground miners, a total of 378, were tested. They have also indicated that the underground production will remain closed until further notice.”

As outlined during the Gauteng Provincial Command Council media briefing on 21 May, employers are required to provide a workplace risk assessment plan that should include, but is not limited to, the provision of screening and testing facilities, sanitary and social distancing measures, and measures to protect vulnerable employees.

As far as the rest of the district is concerned, Mogale City has 55 confirmed cases of Covid-19 (35 recoveries) and Rand West City still has 17 (10 recoveries). There are 84 unallocated cases in this District as well.

In the neighbouring City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality Region C, which comprises Roodepoort, the number of confirmed cases stands at 119, with 85 recoveries.
