Association for the Physically Disabled struggling in lockdown

The Itireleng Association for the Physically Disabled in Mohlakeng is struggling to make ends meet due to limited and often no funding.

According to Dithole Oneboy Rabotsho, managing director of the association, the centre has been struggling a lot without funding and sponsors since lockdown.

We are not operating during this lockdown or giving services to our beneficiaries. We are stuck without funds since the Department of Social Development’s rules have come into effect.

“Funding was the only source of income that was covering stipends and the other operational costs of the centre. We want to buy masks and hand sanitizers as well, but we can’t.

“Our caregivers also cannot deliver medication to our beneficiaries due to a lack of transport. I fear for their health as many take chronic medication daily,” he said.

“We have more than 100 members who receive our services, and there is a waiting list. We lack resources such as transport to cater for all of them, as some are from neighbouring townships and others from informal settlements. Most are forced to use their grant money to come to the centre.

We need more professional caregivers like social workers, health nurses and physiotherapists.

“Another challenge is the state of the building. With funding, we can either renovate or rebuild,” he said.
