Hundreds of food parcels distributed in Toekies

Hundreds of food parcels were distributed to people in Toekomsrus at Hartzstraat Primary School on Tuesday.

Approximately 700 food parcels were distributed to Toekomsrus residents at Hartzstraat Primary School earlier this week.

According to Oscar Oliphant, spokesperson of the Toekomsrus Covid-19 feeding scheme, the food parcels were secured through Food Bank and the Department of Social Development.

Women Against Women and Child Abuse members and other members of the community also helped with packing and distributing the food parcels.

Soldiers and police officers were on the scene to maintain social distancing while community members were screened before they could enter the school premises.

Sipho Molotsane, centre manager of Food Bank said their programme is a Department of Social Development initiative and is run in all five Gauteng regions.

Families that are identified are the ones not working,” Sipho said.

“Usually Food Bank would give a family a food parcel that would last them a month, but now that most people are locked down, we are trying to cover all the wards on the West Rand as much as we can. We have already distributed to those in Merafong, Mogale City and Rand West City,” he said.

“Hopefully we will be able to secure food parcels for the remainder of the people on the list in the near future,” Oscar concluded.
