Fake cops arrested near Bekkersdal

Gauteng Traffic Police pounce on criminals impersonating police officers in Rand West City.

Two men were arrested on the N12 near the R558 in Bekkersdal on Monday, 11 May. They allegedly were impersonating police officers.

Ofentse Morwane, the Gauteng Department of Community Safety spokesperson said the arrests were made by the Gauteng Traffic Police during a routine stop and search operation.

“According to preliminary reports, the officers pulled over a black Toyota Fortuner and requested a driver’s licence,” Morwane said.

“While the driver was on the verge of handing over his driver’s licence, one of the officers spotted a police identity card in his wallet. The officers asked the driver and the passenger if they were members of the South African Police Service, and they both alleged they were indeed police officers.

Upon examining the identity card closely, the officers found that it had been tampered with and was fraudulent.

“The officers immediately arrested the two men. They are being detained at the Bekkersdal Police Station.”

The suspects will appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court today, 12 May facing charges of, among other, impersonating police officers and fraud.

The Gauteng Department of Community Safety welcomed the arrest.

“It is because of the alertness of our Gauteng Traffic Police officers that these alleged criminals were apprehended. The law-enforcement agencies in the province will continue to work around the clock to deal with crime prevention, and ensure the safety and security of the people of Gauteng. We urge members of the public to work closely with our agencies, and report criminal activities in their respective areas.”
