Despite very tough and challenging times, a man from Mohlakeng ensures that families are being fed.
Meet 37-year-old Kagiso Modise from Mohlakeng, a committed citizen like no other who works with local NGOs to assist families with food.
He said upon realising the elderly and less fortunate were not going to be receiving food on a regular basis, he decided to cook and serve them every day. Besides the food, Kagiso was also prepared to fix their electrical appliances (heaters and kettles) at no cost.
But then the Department of Social Development recently called on NGOs wanting to distribute food parcels, to hand them over to the Department for distribution instead – saying the groups may flout lockdown regulations.
To heed the Department’s call, Kagiso is now liasing with a Mohlakeng-based NGO that is said to assist communities in terms of the lockdown regulations, and in line with the rules of the various government departments.
Asked why he helped the community, Kagiso said, “I can relate to and identify with the unemployed, the needy and the less fortunate. The work I do to alleviate poverty, especially in disadvantage communities, is basically premised on moral and Christian values.
“I never want to see my fellow human beings going through hard times and being hungry, hence I decided to start a poverty-alleviation programme that assists the needy.
My ultimate dream is to see poverty being eradicated completely.”
Born in Kagiso, he first attended Boiphelo Primary, followed by Sedimosang Primary and Phahama Senior Secondary, both in Mohlakeng.
He explained, “Like any other child, I was a naughty boy, but realised crime does not pay. I repented and became a born-again Christian.”
