Taxi ranks to be inspected to limit spread of Covid-19

Gauteng Government representatives to visit the West Rand District Municipality’s taxi ranks on 23 April to monitor adherence and preventive measures to help curb the spread of Covid-19 in public transport.

Gauteng Provincial Government representatives will visit the West Rand District Municipality’s taxi ranks on Thursday, 23 April as part of the Province’s continuous monitoring of adherence and preventive measures to help curb the spread of Covid-19 in public transport.

A statement by the Province read that throughout the lockdown period, Jacob Mamabolo, the Gauteng MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure, has been to various main public transport nodes – taxi ranks in particular – in the Cities of Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni, as well as the Sedibeng and Emfuleni District Municipalities to encourage compliance with the set regulations.

These visits are said to strengthen and further enhance interventions where weaknesses are identified, and form part of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s efforts to ensure that all taxi ranks comply with all the regulations.

These include ensuring that all facilities are deep-cleaned, the hands of operators and commuters are sanitized, while all vehicles are disinfected before ferrying passengers.

On Tuesday, 7 April, the Gauteng Roads and Transport Department staff combined their efforts with those of other stakeholders to help sanitize taxis at the Bekkersdal taxi rank. Read here:
