Gas bottle thieves stopped in their tracks

Three men were apprehended and handed over to police for being in possession of 20 gas bottles allegedly stolen at a local fuel station.

Three men were apprehended by EPR Security for the alleged theft of gas bottles.

According to Johan Krogh, General Manager of EPR West Rand, they received a panic alarm activation from a fuel station in Culemborg Park at about 5.18am on Wednesday, 15 April.

“A petrol attendant informed an EPR response officer that 20 gas bottles had been stolen. The thieves allegedly had cut the lock of the cage in which the gas bottles were kept, and left the scene in a VW Kombi. The response officer then gave a description of the vehicle over our radio communications, and another EPR response officer noticed it on Betty Street in Wilbotsdal.

“He called for backup and together they managed to block the vehicle and apprehend three suspects. The gas bottles as well as a bolt cutter allegedly used to cut the lock at the fuel station were found inside the vehicle. The suspects were then handed over to local police for further investigations.”

Krogh said they are proud of the response team and said all of them are still rendering an effective, essential service during the lockdown period.

“We take our hat off to these guys, especially if you take into consideration that they expose themselves and their families to the possibility of contracting Covid-19.

“We once again thank our customers for their support by cancelling false alarms, and keeping a safe distance from our reaction officers when they attend premises, to limit contact to the minimum,” Krogh concluded.
