Three hundred bags of maize meal were donated to families living in an informal settlement at the Randfontein dumping site on Sunday, 12 April.

This was done thanks to a joint effort by the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM), Salaamat Motors and the West Rand Muslim Association.

According to Caroline Setsiba, a representative of RWCLM, the initiative is part of an ongoing goodwill relief effort to help impoverished families during lockdown.

“The community gave the mayor and her team a very warm welcome. They were excited to see her knocking at their doors to deliver the food,” Setsiba said.

She added that community members even offered to help her deliver the bags, as they felt it was inappropriate for a respectable official to carry such heavy bags.

“However, the mayor replied, ‘I am here to serve the people’.”

Setsiba also said the municipality is proud that the project was a success.

“It has even attracted more sponsors who are now willing to help those in need, especially during the crisis we are in.”
