Taking people where they need to be despite Covid-19

Like many other essential services, public transport remains one of the biggest risk areas in the spread of Covid-19. The Herald speaks to Elton Smith.

Elton Smith, 38, a Toekomsrus taxi owner and driver said despite the national lockdown that brought South Africa to a halt, there is a need to render an essential service to his clients – more than ever!

He is also the Public Relations Officer of the Randfontein Toekomsrus Taxi Association (RTTA), and said with the precautionary measures he had implemented, he was happy to ferry passengers who still need to go to work, especially those who work in the food industry.

He said he had been adhering to the regulations instituted by Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula, that only 10 occupants are allowed in his 15-seater minibus at a time. Mbalula has since commended the taxi taxi industry for their efforts.

Like many other essential services, public transport remains one of the biggest risk areas for spreading Covid-19, which Elton said he cannot ignore, considering that many lives may be at risk.

As their driver, it is my responsibility that my clients are safe at all times.

“After each and every load, I disinfect the entire interior of the taxi. I also use a sprayer machine at the taxi rank to clean all surfaces. Passengers are also spayed when they get on board,” Elton said

Elton said he always makes sure he has his mask, safety gloves and enough sanitizers.

Asked why he chose to continue doing his job in light of the pandemic, Elton said, “If we do not provide this service, many things, especially providing in our basic needs, might become far more challenging.

“Although some may say my life is at risk, they should know that we have serious safety measures to ensure that our clients are taken to their destination safely,” Elton added.
