Guarding for clinic and country

Local security officer pledges to remain on duty throughout lockdown.

Ralton Mokoele, a security guard at the PJ Maree Clinic in Toekomsrus is considered another unsung hero, as president Cyril Ramaphosa calls those who are on the frontline during the Covid-19 outbreak.

The 35-year-old, who will remain on duty during the national lockdown, said in addition to ensuring general safety and order at the facility, he also has to make sure that everyone is sanitized when setting foot onto the premises

I want to make a difference, even if it is in a small way.

“There is a war against this globally feared virus which we will win. I think being here is important for two main reasons – making sure that this is a safe environment, and enforcing the rule that whoever accesses this place, adheres to the hygiene rules,” Ralton said. He believes the community needs him now more than ever.

“Many people still come to the clinic; therefore it is now my job to make sure that they do not pose a risk to one another,” he said.

“Every morning when I report for duty, I always make sure that my hands are properly washed and sanitized. I am then provided with gloves and masks, which I change regularly,” Ralton said.

He added that although he won’t call himself an unsung hero outright, he believes that his role will go a long way to eradicating the spread of coronavirus.

“It has become my job and I am extremely proud of it,” Ralton added.
