Theft on the rise during lockdown, EPR warns

EPR warns public of theft being on the rise and criminals posing as essential-service providers.

EPR Security released its crime report for the period Friday, 27 March to Sunday, 29 March.

According to Johan Krogh, general manager of EPR West Rand, criminal activity had dropped in comparison to the previous weekend, which could be due to the lockdown.

However, theft of motor vehicle parts such as batteries, and of property including gate motors, are on the increase.

A crime report for their client base revealed five such incidents in Westonaria, specifically in Saturnus and Forbes Streets, and in Edwards Avenue, as well as in Randfontein at Village and Main Reef Roads.

Furthermore, Krogh said there were two incidents of damage to property in Aureus, and two incidents of trespassing – one in Briggs Street, Westonaria and the other in Wheatlands, Randfontein. In addition, there were an attempted business break-in in Wilbotsdal, a business break-in in Westergloor, and an incident where shots were fired in Vleikop.

Krogh further urged the community to remain vigilant during the lockdown and keep their security gates locked at all times as criminals posing as health workers and other essential services remain a threat.

“Do not open for strangers during this period,” he warned.

“Criminals will use any method possible during this time to attempt to gain entry. Cases of criminals posing as health workers, internet service providers and municipal workers have been reported in other areas. We will keep a close eye on these types of crimes during the lockdown,” he said.
