Police discuss safety with kids

Local police spoke to kids about the importance of good behaviour during school break.

Bekkersdal Police visited two primary schools to discuss safety among learners ahead of the school break.

The visit came just days before it was announced that all schools should remain closed as of 18 March due to the Caronavirus outbreak.

The schools visited were Ipeleng and Maputle Primary Schools.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said the purpose of the visit was to speak to learners about all possible dangers.

“We spoke to them about how talking to a stranger could lead to them being kidnapped. We then educated them on how money and sweets are used to lure them. They were also told to stop playing in remote places,” Lefakane said.

The awareness campaign came after a Grade 1 learner from Ipeleng Primary School was lured, reported missing and then found a day later.

“We want learners to understand the dangers out there.”

However, Lefakane said it remains the responsibility of the parent and/ or guardian to care for their children.

“People also need to know that child neglect and child abandonment are offences punishable by law, and everyone will be held to account,” Lefakane added.
