More than 100 arrested for various crimes on West Rand

Police across the West Rand joined forces and made 108 arrests during another Okae Molao law-enforcement operation in Merafong, Carletonville and Khutsong on Thursday.

Police on the West Rand made a total of 108 arrests during another Okae Molao law-enforcement operation in Merafong, Carletonville and Khutsong on Thursday, 19 March.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, 71 fines were also issued during the operation.

She said those arrested committed crimes including dealing in drugs; possession of dagga, unlicensed firearm and/ or dangerous weapons; dealing in liquor without a licence; drinking in public; possession of drug-abuse paraphernalia (syringe); possession of gold-bearing material; and possession of illicit tobacco.

Some were arrested for serious crimes including murder; housebreaking and theft; assault; rape; robbery; contempt of court; theft; possession of drugs; malicious damage to property; drunken driving; fraud; and possession of stolen property.

The arrested suspects will appear in the Carletonville Magistrates’ Court soon.

Major General Fred Kekana, the West Rand District Police commissioner, applauded law-enforcement agencies and patrollers for their dedication and continuous commitment to fighting crime.

“We are committed to making sure that our community is and feels safe, even during these trying times when globally, we are affected by COVID-19,” Kekana said.
