Westcol students demand NSFAS bursary

Students demands a remittance list of approved students by NSFAS.

Westcol students from Randfontein, Krugersdorp, Carletonville and Westonaria had a peaceful march to Westcol Corporate office park in Randfontein on Thursday, 12 March seeking answers.

The students are demanding nothing but answers from management on the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). About 300 students were prevented from getting inside the premises to get the answers they want.

Only five members of the Student Representative Council (SRC) were allowed by police to get inside while others remained peaceful outside.

Speaking to the Herald, Thabang Mohale, chairperson of the SRC in Randfontein said management has to give them a list of students that are approved.

“Only 5 percent of students got NSFAS allowances. Management said they are issuing out the allowance according to remittance list, and we are requesting to see the list of students who are approved. We also requested to be paid via NSFAS e wallet to avoid unnecessary strike the feedback was not clear. Today we are here at the corporate office to demand answers but no staff is here, only security” he said.

The Herald contacted management who said they do not know anything about NSFAS and declined to give further comment or information about the issues students are facing.
