R28 and R599 completely shut down by violent protesters – two trucks set alight

Two trucks set alight, roads barricaded in early morning protest on the R28 and R559.

The Rand West City Traffic Department has confirmed that two trucks were set alight during a violent protest at the intersection of the R28 and R559 near Mohlakeng on Monday morning (24 February).

According Kgomotso Mthethwa of the Rand West City Traffic Department, residents of an informal settlement in Middelvlei barricaded the roads with burning tyres and even trees as well as rocks.

“When we arrived in the morning, we found that the intersection R28 and R599 was completely shut down by the same protesters. They had also vandalised some traffic lights and signs,” Mthetwa said.

Mthethwa added however, law enforcement agencies have managed to disperse the crowd and has the situation under control/

“Traffic is flowing in the area and are we monitoring the situation,” Mathetwa said.
