Residents of an informal settlement in Middelvlei handed over a memorandum to the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) offices on Friday, 21 February.
Bethuel Munyai, regional secretary of the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) West Rand Region, a political party that spearhead the protest said for many years, residents have been denied basic services.

“Residents are tired of being ignored. We are here to say that the municipality should respond to the community,” Munyai said.
He went on to add, “Government has have never provided any services to these residents. Whether we are talking about an an informal settlement or not, basic services must be provided.”
Sipho Museka a resident of the informal settlement added, “We are making a demand as an informal settlement because we think that other informal settlements receive services from the municipality.”
Tshisdiso Tlharipe, RWCLM spokesperson confirmed that a memorandum was handed over.
“The community are demanding the construction of RDP houses in their area; formalisation in the area and creation of job opportunities, ” Tlharipe said.
