Residents of Ward 33 in Bekkersdal are living in shameful conditions. There are sewage spillages in many parts of the area.
According to councillor Farren Volgraaff, PR officer of the DA who has also visited the area on Tuesday, 18 February, most drains are blocked, causing the sewage spills.

“Residents say they themselves have reported the issue to the local municipality. A truck was sent out to unblock the drain systems, only to get blocked again a few minutes later,” Volgraaff said.
Volgraaff went on to criticise the conditions, saying it is a big problem that has to be attended to by the municipality immediately, otherwise people’s health and businesses in the area could be affected.

“Nothing has been done to address this issue. We urge the municipality to intervene and do something as people cannot be subjected to such conditions,” Volgraaff lamented.
