Shooting in veld leaves one dead, another wounded

One person was killed and another sustained critical injuries after being shot in an open veld in Bekkersdal.

Bekkersdal Police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder following a shooting in an open veld near a tavern in Bekkersdal early on Monday, 10 February.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, confirmed that a 22-year-old man had died while another was in a critical condition.

It is believed the two men were ambushed while walking in an open veld to a tavern in Simunye.

Two attackers appeared from nowhere and fired shots at the victims, fatally wounding one victim in the chest. The other victim was shot in the lower body but managed to call for help,” Lefakane said.

Community members responding to the call found that one man had succumbed to his injuries.

“The motive for the attack is still unknown to the police, however, a case of murder and of attempted murder have been opened,” Lefakane said.

Bekkersdal Police urged the community to be their eyes and ears to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.
