The Rand West City Library marked the 2020 World Read Aloud Day on Wednesday, 5 February by visiting two crèches in Randfontein and promote the culture of reading at a young age.

According to Michelle Devadasan, Library assistant and coordinator of the visits, instilling reading into children can be very beneficial.

“Reading does not only improve their academic development but will assist children to become the independent thinkers of the future,” Michelle said.

Michelle went on to say that on the day, children were exposed to different reading materials and concepts.

Betty Paulse, owner of Chip and Dale Day Care, said the culture of reading is something they have been practicing since starting the day care 22 years ago.

“Reading is very good for children, it expands their imagination and their vocabulary. At the centre, we value this culture of reading because we know the children can gain so much from it,” Betty said.

“Even deaf and hard of hearing learners deserve no less and we show kids there is so much to be enjoyed when reading,” Michelle added.

EduConnect [https://educonnect.co.za/10-benefits-of-reading/] – said to be ‘South Africa’s number one site for information and resources on tackling career decisions, tertiary studies and life after school’ – gave a list of the 10 benefits of reading. They say reading makes you smarter – for longer; helps you unplug (to forget about your cellphone, tablet and laptop for a while); helps you de-stress; can help you sleep better; improves your concentration, and can help you be more creative.

Another Day Care centre that was visited on the day was Motheo Day Care Centre in Westergloor.
