Parents claiming Sassa after death of infants warned

Unreported death and burial is illegal

The South African Social Security Agency would like to issue a warning to parents who do not report the death of premature loss infants not to continue to withdraw the social grant payment. Instead of reporting the death to Home affairs and stop social grant payment. This is as a result of tip-offs by some community members that there are still some parents who are cashing on death infants.

This fraudulent act happens when the child passes on a few weeks or months after birth. Parents bury the child without informing Home Affairs. Unreported death and burial is illegal. SASSA and Home Affairs system are linked/interface on a population register of the country.

Parents are advised and cautioned not to continue with fraudulent activities on a ticket of a lost child. It is insensitive and also a criminal offence which will lead to arrest and prosecution by law enforcement institutions.

When a child passes on, parents must report the death to Home Affairs and SASSA will pick-up that information and stop the grant immediately.

SASSA is urging the public to uphold moral values and good cultural practices of Ubuntu-botho. Also encouraged to continue to report fraudsters stealing tax money.
