Fines aplenty, 170+ arrested in police operation

Fines aplenty were dished out, liquor outlets closed down and more than 170 suspects arrested in Thursday's massive law-enforcement operation held by police in the West Rand District.

Thursday’s Operation Oka Molae held by West Rand District Police between Khutsong and Carletonville resulted in the arrest of more than 170 suspects.

The law-enforcement operation, led by West Rand District Police Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana, began early that morning and continued until the afternoon.

A number of other stakeholders and law-enforcement agencies were also involved, including the Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU), Home Affairs, Traffic Police, Crime Intelligence, Crime Investigators and Community Policing Forum (CPF).

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson confirmed that the 171 suspects were arrested for committing crimes including robbery and home invasions, theft, pointing firearms at people, vehicle theft, assault, perjury, fraud, drinking and driving, possession of stolen goods, possession of drugs and intimidation.

“The operation took place in the form of roadblocks, crime-prevention operations and policing of second-hands goods and liquor outlets,” Lafakane said.

She added that 71 fines to the value of R51 450 were issued for Road Traffic Act violations and non-compliance of liquor outlets.

“In addition, three liquor outlets were closed down and a total of 258 480ml of alcohol confiscated.”

All arrested suspects are expected to appear in their respective Magistrates’ Courts soon.

Major General Fred Kekana thanked the police and others who were involved for leaving the comfort of their homes and responsibilities to serve and protect the communities instead.

“It remains the responsibility of the community to work hand in hand with the police in the fight against crime,” he said.
