Contractor ‘dumps’ massive pipes in resident’s yard

There is no sign of a contractor who allegedly stored storm water pipes in a yard in Toekies.

A Toekomsrus family has been left with the burden of storm water pipes not belonging to them in their yard after a contractor allegedly dumped them there.

Clement Gordon, 33, explained that he had taken over the house belonging to his mother, Lea Prince Fordon, 63, after her passing in December last year.

Two years ago the family reached an agreement with a contractor that the pipes would be stored in their yard temporarily until Apple Street was rehabilitated. He was to pay them a monthly compensation of R2 000.

However, according to Gordon, the contractor did not honour this agreement, missing several payments and going AWOL.

“The first payment he made was in March 2018. He only made 10 payments and was already in arrears while my mother was still alive. The contractor ran away; he does not answer our phone calls and does not bother to respond to our WhatsApp messages,” Gordon said.

He added he and his elder brother managed to force the R5 000 payment from him while arranging their mother’s funeral.

Gordon said he was sent from pillar to post by government departments when he tried to track down the contractor. His yard is now infested with rodents and relations between him and his neighbours are tense.

“The grass near the pipes is overgrown and you cannot even clean around them. The other day I found a dead dog inside one of the pipes, which I had to remove myself because it was in my yard. I cannot afford to rent a truck to remove the pipes,” Gordon concluded.

The Herald also attempted to phone the contractor several times, but without success.
