New teacher on the block

The Herald sat down with Charleen Wright, a new teacher at Randfontein Christian Academy who is undergoing experiential training, to ask her about being new to the profession.

Meet Charleen Wright, an intern teacher and new member of the Randfontein Christian Academy (RCA) family.

The 19-year-old said although it was also her first day like many Grade 1s on Wednesday, 15 January, she has already learnt a lot.

According to Charleen, learners see her as an older sibling, not just an authority figure.

They have made it easier for me and it will help me to ease into this profession,” she said.

Charleen added that within just a day, she has managed to connect with the children, but most importantly, she has realised that as a foundation phase teacher she has a very big responsibility.

“This is the most important stage of a child’s educational journey; everything has to be done right. If they are taught now how to hold a pencil, read or write properly, they will continue doing so for the rest of their lives. This is a very delicate stage because that is when children start thinking for themselves.”

She said as much as discipline can be an effective tool, learners should not have an unhealthy fear for a teacher.

I will always strive to connect with my learners so that they can feel safe and comfortable. Instilling fear in them, day by day, is not the way to go,” she said.

Charleen is currently studying at the University of South Africa (UNISA).
