Municipality donates uniforms to learners in Simunye

The Rand West City Local Municipality donated 20 sets of school uniforms to the needy learners of Kagogelo Primary School.

The Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) has donated 20 sets of school uniforms to the needy learners of Kagogelo Primary School in Simunye.

The handover was done on Wednesday, 15 January in the municipality’s bid to kick off the 2020 academic calendar.

While handing over the items, Executive Mayor Brenda Mahuma said, “We are here as part of government to support education and parents who may be overburdened by school costs, especially considering many of them are unemployed”.

Mahuma said the issues have been exacerbated by the closure of the surrounding mines, causing many breadwinners in these homes to lose their jobs.

As a result, many families are unable to provide their children with new school uniforms or other means to be able to pursue their academics, but as the municipality we have decided to ensure that at least the costs for school uniforms are taken care of,” Mahuma said.

She added that upon learning that there are other learners in school who do not have shoes, she said the municipality would lend a helping hand so that everyone is part of the educational society being built by the government.

Kgosimang Seleke, principal of the school said the donation will go a long way to ease the stress among the parents and will help encourage better academic performance among the learners.

“We are truly grateful for what the municipality has done for these learners and their families. This also shows that the municipality has not forgotten those who are disadvantaged.

Sleke said when an academic year begins, every leaner should start it with confidence, because a learner may easily be robbed of academic potential if there is a lack of anything significant.

“As the school we would like to encourage the municipality to expand the same initiative where it might be needed,” Seleke added.
