Toddler’s body found in local dam

Toddler's body found floating in Westonaria dam.

The body of an 18-month old toddler was found floating in Donaldson Dam in Westonaria.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said the child’s body was discovered after a security officer patrolled the area one afternoon in December last year.

He called the police and the body was retrieved from the dam and certified dead. A preliminary investigation could not reveal the identity of the little one and are investigations continuing.”

Lefakane added that the child was found wearing a green top, pink shirt, blue track pants and blue sandals with a pink rose.

“Child neglect is a pattern of failing to provide for a child’s basic needs. Child abandonment occurs when a parent, guardian or a person in charge of a child either deserts a child without any regard for the child’s physical health, safety or welfare with the intention of wholly abandoning the child. Both offences are punishable by law and if proven the parental rights can be terminated,” Lefakane said.
