Major dog and cat vaccine drive at local informal settlement

This initiative was put in place to assist the animals through positive engagement with the community.

The Department of Agriculture Veterinary Services from Randfontein conducted a dog and cat vaccination and pet health day at the Video informal settlement in Muldersdrift ahead of the Parvo Virus and Distemper epidemic expected in the new year in the Muldersdrift area due to the heat and rain.

With the assistance of Shan Cochrane, Gateway Land Owners Association (GLOA) chairperson, and GLOA members Val Hogan and Michael Henning, the team vaccinated over 150 dogs and three cats, dewormed them, treated minor wounds and fly-bitten ears, before dipping each one (which most dogs enjoyed in the extreme heat). Members from the Randburg SPCA joined the team and distributed bags of dog food to those in need.

This initiative was put in place to assist the animals through positive engagement with the Video community. Going forward the team will return to Video in the new year to provide veterinary assistance to the animals, conduct further vaccinations and begin sterilisations.

“The project is good news for all animal owners in Muldersdrift,” said Shan. “The informal settlements are rife with Parvo Virus and Distemper, and these illnesses are being spread over the district by workers who literally ‘walk’ the virus into surrounding areas on the soles of their shoes. Going forward, we would like to support the Veterinary Services team who will be raising awareness through education, and where possible contribute towards much-needed funds for sterilisations.”
