Man arrested in connection with two murders

A 40-year-old man has been arrested for two murders – one last year and the other in August this year.

Bekkersdal Police arrested a 40-year-old man in connection with two murders.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said the arrest was made yesterday (Thursday, 5 December), explaining that the suspect had been on the run since August this year for allegedly killing a 39-year-old man in the Mandela Section in Bekkersdal.

“The deceased was with friends when a man stormed in, demanding his firearm from the victim.

When he allegedly could not get what he wanted, he took a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times. He also continued to ransack the deceased’s shack, searching for the said firearm, before fleeing on foot,” Lefakane said.

A murder case was opened but the suspect had been on the run since the incident.

“Detective John Maoba, the investigating officer, worked on the case and through the intelligence he collected he managed to track down the suspect and arrested him at his hideout,” Lefakane said.

Further investigations revealed that the same suspect was wanted in connection with another murder also committed in the Mandela Section during 2018.

“He is expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon,” Lefakane added.
