Jan Viljoen learner receives additional punishment

A learner filmed while assaulting a fellow learner has been instructed to make amends.

The female Hoërskool Jan Viljoen learner who was suspended for allegedly assaulting a fellow male learner in November received additional punishment, her attorney confirmed on Tuesday.

The Herald reported last month that the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) had suspended, with immediate effect, a 16-year-old Grade 10 girl from Hoërskool Jan Viljoen for allegedly assaulting a 16-year-old Grade 9 boy. The GDE confirmed that the incident took place on Tuesday, 12 November at the said school after the learners had written their exams. This emanates from video footage that went viral on social media, in which the girl is seen assaulting the boy.

According to the teen’s attorney, who wishes to remain anonymous at this stage, the School Governing Body did not only find her guilty of assault and using vulgar language during a disciplinary hearing held recently, they suspended her provisionally.

The attorney added, “She was suspended from school, which has been suspended for one year. She is required to apologise to the school for her behaviour in writing. During the first assembly of the new school year she is required to apologise to the entire school. She is required to undergo psychological evaluation out of her own pocket, and attend a programme, for example in anger management.”

She was found not guilty of posting the video on social media though. The attorney confirmed that a criminal case was pending, following the case of assault the boy had opened against her.

“Later today, (3 December), we will be making statements to the investigation officer, and then we will take it from there,” the attorney explained.

“I believe the school has treated her fairly.”

The attorney added that nobody wanted to listen to the girl’s side of the story, but because the case is pending, she is not allowed to say too much about the case at this stage.
