Decomposed body found near mine

Police are investigating a case of murder after the decomposed body of man with his hands tied was discovered recently.

According to the Bekkersdal Police, an investigation into a case of murder is under way after a body was discovered in a ditch alongside Syferfontein Road near the Cooke 4 Gold mine recently.

The body was that of a male believed to be in his late 30s.

According Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the body was discovered by a passer-by at about 4.30pm on Thursday, 14 November.

“It is alleged by the witness that he was busy cutting trees in the veld when he spotted a person in a ditch. He went closer to investigate and realised that both his hands were tied with shoelaces to the front and he was already deceased. He alerted the police who are now investigating a case of murder.”

Lefakane said the cause of death is still to be determined.

“The deceased was wearing a black tracksuit top, brown trousers, white takkies and a blue cap. His identity is unknown,” she said.
