Got a disability? Why horses are your best bud …

Local horse rider on why and how horses are good for therapy.

With November being Disability Awareness Month, the Herald went to speak to Surette Botes, a local horse rider, to find out why horses are good for therapy.

Surette said that horse riding has many therapeutic benefits, which include improving balance, helping with core muscles and socialising, and assisting people with disabilities.

To quote Constance Scharff, Ph.D., of Psychology Today, ‘… horses can be used to help people heal from a variety of psychological issues’.

“According to the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.), there are many different types of “equine-assisted activities like identifying and processing feelings, work ethic and trust.”
