UPDATE: Person in custody following discovery of teen’s body

A man in his 20s was taken in for questioning after the semi-decomposed body of 17-year-old girl had been discovered.

Randfontein Police have confirmed that a 25-year-old man has been taken in for questioning on Monday, 11 November after the semi-decomposed body of 17-year-old girl had been discovered at the Mohlakeng hostel last week.

Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, Randfontein Police spokesperson, confirmed that the teenager’s body was found on Tuesday, 5 November.

“Police members received information about flies and a strong smell coming from one of the rooms at the hostel. One of the residents pointed out the room to them and when they entered it, they found the decomposing body of a female covered in a blanket,” she said.

Hendricks added that the body was identified as that a female learner of a Mohlakeng school.

“The body has since been taken to the Roodepoort Mortuary for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. An inquest has since been opened and investigations are continuing,” Hendricks added.

Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, the Randfontein Police station commander urged the community to report gender-based violence immediately.

“I am very saddened by the incident and want to send a strong message out to criminals that crime does not pay.”
