A 23-year-old man appeared before the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 28 October after he allegedly raped his 27-year-old ex-girlfriend on Saturday, 26 October in Silvercity, Bekkersdal.
According to the police, the incident happened after the man went to the victim’s home on the pretext of checking on his child.
“The suspect allegedly fell asleep after forcing himself on his victim. She managed to escape and ran to the police to report the matter,” said Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the spokesperson for the Bekkersdal Police.

Lefakane said the police found the suspect still sleeping and arrested him.
“He was remanded in custody pending his bail application,” Lefakane added.
Colonel Tinus Swart, station commander at the Bekkersdal Police Station commended the members for their swift reaction, and urged the community to report any incidents of violence against women and children.
