Police warn of armed suspects terrorising the public

Police warn the public after two recent incidents in which excessive violence was used.

Bekkersdal Police are deeply concerned about a number of murders, attempted murders as well as robberies occurring in the area – in both formal and informal settlements.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, said the individuals responsible for terrorising the public are armed with firearms and wear balaclavas.

She said in the latest incident that took place in the Holomisa Section of Bekkersdal at about 7pm on Monday, 21 October, a couple was targeted by three men while walking.

“The victim and his girlfriend were out walking when they were accosted by three men. The suspects then robbed them of their cellphones before shooting the man in the stomach. The suspects allegedly continued to fire shots randomly at the couple while fleeing on foot. The man had to be transported to hospital.”

She added that another incident took place in what is known as the ‘Uptown section’ in Bekkersdal at about 10pm on Friday, 18 October. Two people were listening to music inside their parked vehicle when they suddenly noticed an unknown person approaching them.

“This person fired two shots at them before grabbing their cellphones and fleeing on foot. Both victims sustained injuries to their legs,” Lefakane said.

She added that the perpetrators of both incidents are still at large, and officers are monitoring the areas.

“We are making an appeal to the public to refrain from exposing themselves to danger by either visiting taverns late at night, or walking in the streets during the night. We also urge the public to report illegal and suspicious activities. Let the police investigate,” Lefakane added.

Anyone who might have information that could assist in the above cases is requested to contact the Bekkersdal Police on 011 755 8040 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Information can also be sent anonymously by SMS to 32211.
