WAWA hosts sporting fun day

Sports day in Toekomsrus for persons with disabilities

WAWA (Women Against Women Abuse) held a sporting fun day on Friday, 18 October at the WAWA centre in Toekomsrus.

WAWA, in partnership with the Gauteng Liquor Board and Sport, Arts and Culture hosted the event, called My Friend with a Disability is still my friend, for persons living with disabilities.

According to Enrique Bhana, one of the organisers for the event, WAWA caters for all, especially their friends at the Toekies workshop under the leadership of Mr Harvey.

“Responsible drinking cuts across all borders, and in all communities, persons living with disabilities are also vulnerable when it comes to alcohol consumption,” said Nozipho Mkwanazi, another organiser of the event.

According to Owen Green, who also helped to organise the fun day, added that sport is a tool that unites all, and he applauded WAWA for a job well done.

“We played all sorts of sports – from volleyball, tennis, soccer, wheelchair racing to board games, to name just a few – and we had lots of fun,” Enrique added.

“WAWA’s slogan of the event was #WawaMakingAdifference. We don’t wait for Disability Week or Month, we do it 365 days,” he said.
