Man shot at during protest

Man speaks about afternoon when he encountered protesters and a hail of bullets descended down on his vehicle.

A 47-year-old man said he had to run for his life when bullets rained down on his vehicle during a recent protest in Middelvlei.

Simon Barkhuizen said he was driving his old Opel station wagon on an open road on Monday afternoon (12 October) when the incident happened.

“When shots were suddenly fired at my vehicle, I panicked and quickly sped off. In the process, I noticed a number of people standing some distance away from the road, taking aim at my car,” Barkhuizen said.

He added that while still frantic, he saw that the road had been barricaded with rocks and other and objects, and that police were spotted monitoring the protest.

To add to his traumatic experience, Barkhuizen said when he ran to the police to tell them what had just happened, they allegedly told him to leave and get out of the way.

“Another person whose car was shot at followed me. He also stopped to show the police the damage to his car. If the police knew that there was a violent protest, why didn’t they close the road and warn us? I am sorry, but the government or whoever is responsible for public safety will repair the damage to my car.”

He said he encountered another difficulty at the Randfontein Police Station.

“I was waiting at the police station for two and half hours, and when eventually it was my turn, they told me that I was supposed to have given the statement at the scene in order to open a case,” he lamented.

Although he managed to open a case, he is still awaiting a case number, an upset Barkhuizen said.
