Relaying in memory of the battles won and lost

Survivors were given the opportunity to start the relay

This year’s Cancer Relay, organised by the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) that took place on the sports fields at Hoërskool Bastion, was once again a day filled with smiles, tears of joy and memories.

The emotional, yet celebrated day, was kicked off by all the survivors, wearing their white sashes, having the honour of opening the relay with a victory lap. This was done to the sound of well know South African singer Lance James’ song, Dankie, specially dedicated to them. Lanterns surrounded the field, lighting the way for the participants, every one decorated with a special message, either in memory of someone who had lost the battle or to someone still fighting it.

As they made their way back to the finishing line, joyful and blessed smiles lit up the night sky. After the first walk, all the Caregivers, wearing their purple sashes, took their place next to the survivors at the starting line and started the second round. The teams or other participants were then allowed to join the relay and start their journey that lasted throughout the night. Every participant collected a charm after every round that they completed, to keep track of the number of rounds for the day.

The guests and participants were entertained throughout the night with special guests taking the stage one after the other, creating a joyful atmosphere with their beautiful voices.

Community members were also invited to join the day as day visitors, and share in the memories of those we have lost and those whose lives we are still able to celebrate.
