Rape survivor invites all to support her cause

Leilani Kuter is walking 27km a day for 27 days to raise awareness about the traumatised victims of sexual abuse. She also invites others to join her.

To raise awareness about a worthy cause, Leilani Kuter recently walked approximately 13,5km from Tony’s Meat Market and back.

On Monday, 16 September 2019, which coincided with the 27th anniversary of her rape ordeal, Leilani began a 27-day journey totalling 729km that started in Pretoria and will eventually end at the Ruimsig parkrun in Roodepoort on 12 October.

Leilani said her story has, in many ways, been a private ‘family secret’ until now. Speaking openly about her ordeal, Leilani hopes to empower other rape survivors to speak out and free themselves of the stigma rape carries.

According to The Crime Against Women in South Africa Report by Statistics SA only one in every nine rape cases is reported and of those, only four per cent result in prosecution. Unfortunately for Leilani, these statistics tell her story. Like so many survivors, her case has never been solved.

Leilani invites anyone who wishes to support this cause to walk with her.
