‘Women can go far in the mining industry’

Rand West City Mayor: "Apart from gender-based violence, unemployment is the new struggle that women live with".

Unemployment is the latest ill plaguing women in society.

This is according to what Brenda Mahuma, Executive Mayor of the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM), said during her address at the Women In Mining Launch hosted at the Randfontein Bird Sanctuary in Helikon Park.

She said apart from gender-based violence, unemployment is the new struggle that women live with.

The mayor described the occasion as a historical one for both Rand West City and the West Rand.

“I hope this launch will raise the flag that help is needed and that poverty is a reality. This will prepare women not to seek jobs but hopefully provide them with better knowledge and relevant skills to go make something of it.”

Thabisile Phumo, the Sibanye-Stillwater vice-president, said in her address that women need skills in the mining industry.

“Girls don’t have technological or artisanal skills. As a mine, we want to be part of the TVET colleges and form a constructive dialogue to better equip women with these skills. Women must know they can go far in the mining industry.”
