Latest strike in R’fontein: Licensing Department up and running from Wednesday only

UPDATE: Rand West City Local Municipality said latest strike called by SAMWU 'was unlawful' and that the Licensing Department would be up and running again from 25 September.

Service delivery seems to have been hit hard again in Randfontein, with yet another strike taking place.

This last week saw the Herald inundated with complaints and phone calls from the community, saying specifically that the Randfontein Licensing Department is non-functional.

Residents said they are upset and impatient about the situation.

UPDATE: Municipal workers strike over

Although the Herald reported on 2 September that the strike by Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) employees – which had affected service delivery for some time – was over and that workers returned to work as of Saturday, 31 August to render services to our communities, another strike was called by the South Africa Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) on 13 September.

According to an official statement released by Themba Goba, municipal manager at RWCLM, the Labour Court of South Africa granted a Court Order on an urgent basis declaring the latest strike called by SAMWU which commenced on 13 September unlawful, unprotected and/or prohibited as contemplated by section 64 of the Labour Relations Act 66 of 1995.

He said employees were ordered to return to their workplace and resume normal duties by 8.30am on Monday, 23 September and that employees not complying with the Court Order would be in contempt thereof. Disciplinary action, which might result in their dismissal, would be taken against them.

Phillip Montshiwa, Head of Communications and Marketing at RWCLM assured the Herald that the strike has been called off and employees are returning to work. The Licensing Department will however only resume normal working hours on Wednesday, 25 September.
